BALI - October '97
After the ZOAT in Jakarta we
went to Bali to recover from this tiring event. First we traveled
to Kalibukbuk on the north coast, also known as 'Lovina Beach'.
We stayed at 'Hotel Nirwana'. Imagine this place:
Apart from relaxing on the beach and
enjoying the beautiful Indonesian food at a stall on the beach or in
some of the many restaurants
around, we also went out on the sea to have a look at the dolphins
:
Next day we have rented a car and, amongst other things, we
have seen some very interesting Balinese temples. Here are some pictures
of a Balinese fertility temple :
One night we went to a 'diner dansant'.
However, on Bali this has a slightly different meaning : the
guests have dinner and the dances are performed by dancers. The
idea of course is to get a taste of traditional Balinese dances
.
After a couple of days we have taken the public bus eastwards along the
coast. Nobody took live stock on the bus. However, this bush had to go
with us (notice the size of it !):
We ended up in Tulamben. This is a very small village with no entertainment
at all, except for the "US Liberty". This ship has been torpedoed by the Japanese
in WW II and the remains can now be found just 50-100 meters of the beach. Being
a scuba diver I couldn't miss this opportunity to go down and have a look at the
wreck. It was beautiful and through the years it has been overgrown by lots of
corals and loads of tropical fish have found a home here.
More information on the dive sites around Bali can be found on many web pages, e.g. Bali's Best Dive Sites , or the site of the resort that was just next door of our hotel.
